About Macdonald Swan

The 3-star Macdonald Swan was built in 1650 as a Grasmere coaching inn and is one the Lake District’s oldest hotels, even mentioned in Wordsworth’s poem ‘The Waggoner’. The Grasmere village centre is ten minutes’ walk away, the Wordsworth Trust and Dove Cottage 15 minutes, and Windermere and the railway station are nine miles away.

Each of the 37 rooms have en-suite bathrooms and a hairdryer, and a minimum standard of satellite TV, free Wi-Fi, large desk, tea and coffee-making facilities and ironing equipment.

Dogs are welcome to stay in classic rooms for a fee, free parking is available, Macdonald Swan has blazing log fires in winter and a sheltered garden with views of Helm Crag.

Waggoners Restaurant serves updated traditional favourites, as well as buffet breakfasts, and meals are also served in the Green Lounge and Walkers’ Bar.

Ambleside is found 4.6 miles to the south.

Positive Reviews

Relaxed Grasmere location.

Guests found Macdonald Swan to offer lovely fell views, a short walk to the pretty village of Grasmere, and a central, relaxing base to explore other spots in the Lakes District, like Windermere or Ambleside.

Lovely coaching inn, well-furnished rooms.

Those who stayed enjoyed the lovely grounds and character of the old coaching inn, while the clean, quiet, and well-furnished rooms also proved to meet guests’ requirements.

Breakfast selection, nice meals and drinks.

The buffet breakfasts were praised for their wide selection and the cooked options thought to be well-cooked, while the evening meals and ales in the bar are apparently also nice.

Negative Reviews

A bit dated, Wi-Fi.

A small number of guests at Macdonald Swan found the hotel to be a bit tired and dated, while some thought the Wi-Fi signal could have been better.

Expensive to stay, and drink.

The hotel room rates were thought to be a little too high by a few guests, and the prices charged for drinks also raised a few eyebrows.

Too many stairs.

Those who plan on doing a lot of hiking, have heavy luggage or mobility problems, should be aware that there are a fair number of stairs to navigate on the way up to the second floor.
