About Heeren By The River

Situated in an enviable spot in downtown Malacca, Heeren By The River is a new boutique hotel that has been created by converting three 19th century Anglo-Chinese row houses.

The rooms are well furnished and equipped, featuring lovely hardwood or tiled floors, flat-screen TVs with Astro channels, tea/coffee stations, free Wi-Fi and luxury bedding for a good night’s rest. Some rooms have balconies with views over the Malacca River.

The reception staff can assist with basic concierge services. Limited parking is available onsite.

There are no dining facilities at Heeren By The River, but a terrific choice in restaurants on the busy streets outside. Sid’s Pub is just across the road and the perfect spot for a cold Tiger Beer.

Being situated right in the historic core means that many of this World Heritage city’s best attractions are just moments away. Jonker Walk, the ruined St Paul’s Church and Dutch Square are all less than 10 minutes walk away.

Positive Reviews

Terrific central location

Guests couldn’t have been any happier with the location of the hotel. It as described as pretty much right on Jonker Street, close to all the dining, shopping and attractions guests could want. Often mentioned was the Jonker Street Night Market, which was a hit with guests and just a stroll away.

Good value for money

Guests were happy with the value for money they received here, saying that whatever issues they had with the hotel had to be seen in the context of the low room rates and incredible location in the centre of the action.

Friendly and helpful staff

Guests really only had good things to say about the hotel’s reception staff. They were said to be very friendly, offering a warm welcome and really making guests feel at ease. They were also said to be more than willing to help when approached with a query or concern.

Negative Reviews

Guests need to climb very steep stairs

The hotel is located in a converted 19th century building. While the owners have modernised it, there is still no lift installed. As a result, guests reported that they needed to climb a very steep flight of stairs in order to get to their rooms.

The environment can get pretty noisy

As a result of the incredible central location, guests mentioned that night revellers on Jonker Street and nearby did create some issues. The noise could clearly be heard in the guest rooms, which sometimes resulted in disrupted sleep.

Shower not properly separated from the toilet

Guests didn’t like that the shower was not really separated from the rest of the bathroom. This meant that after showering the whole bathroom, including the toilet, was wet, making it awkward to use immediately afterwards.
