About Royal Street

Royal Street in New Orleans runs from Canal Street to Jackson Barracks, following the curve of the river, for a distance of almost 3 km and is one of the oldest streets in the city. The most scenic section is between Canal Street and Esplanade Avenue and together with Bourbon Street it forms the heart of the French Quarter. Here are the traditional buildings with wrought-iron balconies from the 18th and 19th centuries. Royal Street provides a genteel contrast to the party atmosphere of Bourbon Street and is lined with upmarket hotels, restaurants and antique shops. The section between St Louis Street and St Ann Street is pedestrianised every afternoon and frequented by street entertainers.

New Orleans has a rich lore of ghost stories and many of the allegedly haunted buildings are in Royal Street. Ghost Tours of the area are offered.

Royal Street was fortunately spared major damage in the floods caused by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
